Luke and friends

Luke was born on Easter Monday, 13th April 1998, the only child of David and Kim Somerfield.

He was brought up outside Bethlehem, a small village near Llandeilo, living on the highest hill farm in the Brecon Beacons - a wild and beautiful place.

He attended the local primary school and spent a lot of time with his maternal Grandparents and Aunt in nearby Llandybie while his parents were working.

He went to Tre-Gib Secondary School which he loved and was extremely popular with his peers and teachers.

He enjoyed collecting automobilia and riding his quad bike on the farm. He loved fishing with David from their boat off the Welsh coast and going to the cinema with his Mother or Aunt Heather to see the latest movies.

On the 6th June Luke together with three school friends went to Cilyrychen Quarry. He got into difficulties in the freezing water and tragically died later that evening at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

David and Kim are determined that something positive will come out of what has happened and to that end they have formed a charity, The Luke Somerfield Memorial Trust.

The objectives of the Trust are:

  • The advancement in life and helping of young people living in Carmarthenshire by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals.

  • Advancing education.

  • Providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit.
